About Melissa

I've lived almost my entire life in small towns like Strathmore. I was born in Fort McMurray during the "boom times" in the 80's, moving south to Sherwood Park when Fort Mac started getting too big. When boom times found us once again, my family again moved south, this time landing in Sylvan Lake. In post-secondary I studied land reclamation and remediation at Olds College, and was proud to be named the 2012 class valedictorian in my graduating year. Following the conclusion of my studies, I moved to the big city and started working as an environmental advisor for the next ten years - first at a consulting firm, then for a power transmission utility. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, I decided to pivot my career and focus on what was important to me - serving my community. Since being elected in 2021, serving the people of Strathmore has been my main focus of employment.

It has been a privilege to spend the past four years serving the residents of my community, and I hope to have the opportunity to continue to serve the people of Strathmore until 2029 and beyond.

Ten years ago in 2015 I packed up boxes of my belongings in my tiny Calgary apartment and made the move to Strathmore. Four years ago I packed up my partner's belongings and moved him across provinces to join me in our small town. Two years ago we were married in council chambers at the Strathmore Town Hall, a space dear to my heart. This year, my husband and I welcomed Strathmore's newest resident to our family, a beautiful baby boy.

Strathmore is where I've chosen to plant my roots, and I'm dedicated to building a community that allows my family, and others, to thrive.

What I've Learned

I believe that one of my responsibilities while serving on Council is dedicating time to learning and expanding my knowledge to better serve our community. These are some of the formal educational opportunities I've participated in:

Elected Officials Education Program - UofA

  • Munis 101: The Essentials of Municipal Governance (2021)

  • Council's Role in Public Engagement (2022)

  • Council's Role in Land Use Development and Approvals (2024)

  • Regional Partnerships & Collaboration (2025)

Haskayne School of Business - UofC

  • Communication for the Senior Leader (2023)

Where I've Served

Councillors not only serve at the Council table, we can also be appointed to a number of different boards and committees. It is not a requirement to participate, and not all Councillors have chosen to take on the responsibility of additional boards and committees. I have chosen to treat Council as my primary job, and therefore volunteered to take on a number of additional roles:

  • Town of Strathmore Library Board (Vice-Chair)

  • Family & Community Support Services Advisory Committee

  • Culture & Wellness Task Force

  • Marigold Library Board

    • Executive Committee

    • Standards & Services Committee
